SPIE was very quick to adopt an environmental approach both in its operating methods and in the services it offers its customers.

SPIE is making a very real contribution to ensuring that the targets set by the European Union (adopted by France's Grenelle environment forum) are met by 2020:
SPIE, which is the first company to obtain the “energy efficiency” accreditation awarded by SERCE (French association of electrical engineering and HVAC companies), is developing and implementing cutting-edge expertise to reduce energy consumption and protect the environment.
The Group is contributing to the development of low-consumption, "positive energy" buildings and to the promotion of sustainable building in accordance with high environmental quality (HEQ) standards. In urban areas, SPIE is helping to improve living conditions through eco-friendly transport management and by optimising public lighting.
SPIE is also a leading player in the provision of electrical infrastructure for renewable energies: wind power, photovoltaics and biofuels.
SPIE's Technology Institute plays an essential role in fostering the development of the skills of personnel whose work is directly related to environmental issues. As a result, special training courses have been developed in fields such as energy efficiency and public lighting maintenance.

Nearly two-thirds of SPIE's network has now obtained ISO 14 001 certification (environment management system)
